- Your hosting. Where the site lives should be an account in your name, so you are never trapped on one company's servers.
Renting vs owning
Many website builders and agencies use a rental model. You pay a monthly fee, and in exchange the site stays online. How to check if you own your current site
Ask whoever manages your site these questions:
- Is my domain registered in my name, in an account I can log into?
- Can I get a full copy of my website files and content?
- If I leave, does my site keep working, and can I move it?
- Am I paying a monthly fee just to keep the site online?
If you cannot get a clear yes to the first three, or the answer to the last one is yes, you are renting.
